injectables

Injectables used in the treatment of humans is known as botulinum toxin type A. It is a potent toxin which has been used successfully both medically and cosmetically for decades. Cosmetically, it is indicated for fine lines, minor correction of the nose and jaw line. It is used medically in the treatment of migraines, crossed eyes, upper motor-neurone syndrome and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

The most common areas are forehead, glabella (muscle in between the brows) and crow’s feet (small lines at the corners of the eye). Those with heavy or square jaw lines can realise dramatic effects with just a small amount of botulinum toxin type A. The underarms, feet and hands can also be effectively treated for those who suffer from excessive sweating.

What happens during treatment?
In each case, we carefully measure the area and mark points using a white pencil. We have to be aware of facial symmetry as often a line will be deeper on one side of the forehead than the other so this will depend on the amount injected. Ice is held onto each site of injection, and then a fine needle injects the botulinum toxin type A into the muscle botulinum toxin type A can take up to ten days to take full effect so often very little change is seen immediately. Some swelling and transient redness may be present which will subside.

The results are a smoother area, (the ability to make facial expressions is less) meaning fewer furrows when making these expressions. If required, the eyebrows can be lifted slightly opening up the eyes giving a more youthful appearance immediately.

Botulinum toxin type A is only temporary and must be repeated every 3 – 4 months.
